In 1799 an Anglo-Russian invasion took place in North Holland. In several places there was heavy fighting, including Castricum. The skeleton whose face is reconstructed here was found in the dunes around the Huis van Hilde, the exhibition centre.
The soldier was between 19 and 28 years old when he died on the battlefield, and DNA research showed that his family came from Lithuania and the surrounding area. At 1 meter 69, he was a normal height for Russian men of the period. Due to all kinds of problems, the Russian soldiers were poorly fed, perhaps also weakened and therefore they may have looked somewhat miserable.
